DTF Transfer Guide: How to Order, Upload & Press
Everything you need to know before ordering DTF transfers from ODCAF Express.
Whether you're printing one shirt or preparing transfers for your business, this guide will help you choose the right ordering option, prepare your artwork correctly, and get the best results when pressing your transfers.
What Are DTF Transfers?
DTF (Direct to Film) transfers are full-color heat transfers that allow detailed artwork to be applied to a wide variety of garments using a heat press.
DTF works great for logos, illustrations, photographs, colorful designs, and custom apparel.
They can be applied to both light and dark garments and work with popular fabrics including cotton, polyester, and cotton/poly blends.

Each DTF yard measures 15" × 36". Arrange as many designs as you can inside the 15" × 36" print area. You control the size, quantity, and placement of the designs on your file.
Important: One separate print-ready 15" × 36" file is required for every DTF yard ordered.

Before You Upload Your Artwork
For the best print quality, please make sure:
- Your artwork has a transparent background.
- Your design is already sized to the dimensions you want printed.
- High-resolution artwork is provided whenever possible; 300 DPI is recommended for raster images.
- Your artwork is not mirrored.
- Only the elements you want printed are included in the file.
- Unwanted backgrounds, guides, notes, borders, and extra elements have been removed.
- Small text, extremely thin lines, and very fine details have been checked before submitting.
- Your gang sheet file measures exactly 15" × 36" when ordering DTF by the yard.
We Print Your Artwork as Submitted
Please review your artwork carefully before placing your order.
ODCAF Express does not automatically resize, redesign, recolor, rearrange, improve, or correct customer artwork before printing.
The size and layout submitted are the size and layout that will be printed.
If your artwork needs design assistance before printing, please contact us before ordering so we can determine whether an artwork service is needed.
Artwork Quality
The quality of the final transfer depends heavily on the quality of the artwork provided.
High-resolution files with clean edges will produce the best results.
Low-resolution artwork may appear blurry or pixelated when printed, especially when enlarged.
Whenever possible, upload your artwork at its intended print size instead of enlarging a small image.
Transparent Backgrounds
Your file should contain only the artwork you want printed.
If your artwork contains a visible background, that background may print as part of the transfer.
For logos and graphics, a high-resolution PNG with a transparent background is usually the easiest format for customers to submit.
Small Details & Fine Lines
Extremely small details and very thin lines may not receive enough white underbase or adhesive to transfer correctly.
This can cause tiny elements to disappear, break apart, or lift during pressing.
If your design contains very fine artwork, increasing the thickness of those details before submitting the file can improve transfer reliability.
Color Disclaimer
Colors viewed on a phone, tablet, or computer screen may look different when printed.
Screens produce color using light, while printed products reproduce color using inks and pigments. Differences in screen brightness, device settings, artwork color profiles, and the garment itself can affect the final appearance.
Because of this, an exact screen-to-print color match cannot be guaranteed.
If an exact brand or Pantone color is critical to your project, please contact us before ordering.
How to Press Your DTF Transfer
For the best and most consistent results, we strongly recommend using a heat press.

Prepare the Garment
Place the garment flat on your heat press.
A short pre-press can help remove moisture and wrinkles before applying the transfer.

Position the Transfer
Place your DTF transfer in the desired location with the printed design facing the garment.
Make sure the transfer is straight and positioned correctly before pressing.
Heat-resistant tape can be used when additional stability is needed.

Press
Our general starting recommendation is: 310°F / 155°C, 15 seconds, medium to firm, even pressure.
Different garments and heat presses can behave differently, so small adjustments may occasionally be necessary.
Always consider the heat tolerance of the garment being decorated.

Let It Cool
ODCAF Express transfers are cold peel.
After pressing, allow the transfer to cool for approximately 15–30 seconds before removing the film.
Once cooled, slowly peel the film away from one corner.
Do not force the peel if the design has not fully adhered.

Final Press
Cover the transferred design with parchment paper or an appropriate protective sheet.
Press again for approximately 5 seconds.
This second press helps improve adhesion and durability while giving the finished print a professional appearance.
What If My Transfer Doesn't Stick?
If part of the design lifts while peeling, stop peeling and place the film back down.
Press the transfer again using slightly more pressure.
Heat presses can vary in actual temperature and pressure, so troubleshooting should usually begin with pressure before making large temperature changes.
Once the transfer has adhered completely, perform the final press.
Do I Need a Heat Press?
Yes — a heat press is strongly recommended.
DTF transfers depend on consistent heat and pressure to properly bond the adhesive to the garment.
Household irons generally do not provide consistent pressure or even heat across the entire design. A transfer may appear attached at first but can have reduced durability after washing.
For reliable, professional results, use a heat press whenever possible.
What Fabrics Can I Use?
DTF is extremely versatile. Our transfers can be used on many light and dark garments, including:
- 100% cotton
- Cotton/polyester blends
- 100% polyester
Specialty fabrics or heat-sensitive garments may require different settings or testing before production.
When working with an unfamiliar garment, we recommend testing first whenever possible.
How to Wash DTF Printed Garments
Proper care helps extend the life of your print.
- Wait at least 24 hours after pressing before the first wash whenever possible.
- Wash the garment inside out in cold water using a gentle cycle.
- Avoid harsh detergents and bleach directly on the print.
- For the longest life, hang dry or tumble dry using low heat.
- Avoid ironing directly over the transferred design.
How Long Do DTF Transfers Last?
A properly applied and cared-for DTF transfer can remain vibrant through many washes.
Actual longevity depends on several factors, including the garment, press temperature, pressure, application quality, washing method, detergent, and drying temperature.
Correct pressing and proper garment care make a significant difference in durability.
Common DTF Ordering Mistakes
Uploading Low-Resolution Artwork
A small image taken from the internet or screenshot may look fine on your phone but become pixelated when enlarged for printing.
Leaving a Background in the File
If the background is visible in your artwork, it may become part of the printed transfer.
Mirroring the Artwork
Do not mirror your DTF files. We print your artwork in the orientation needed for transfer application.
Sending the Wrong Size
Artwork is printed based on the dimensions submitted or selected during ordering. Always confirm your intended print size before placing the order.
Making Details Too Thin
Extremely fine lines and tiny details may not transfer reliably. Thicken delicate areas whenever necessary.
Forgetting to Check the Gang Sheet
When ordering DTF Gang Sheets, review the entire 15" × 36" file before uploading. Make sure nothing overlaps, gets cut off, extends outside the print area, or appears at the wrong size.
